Singer-songwriter Nick Fabian is the perfect combination of Saturday night at the club bliss and Sunday morning reflection. The young and promising artist throws it back to when the music mattered, while keeping it fresh with invigorating soul-pop hooks. It’s an irresistible modern vintage aesthetic. Fittingly, Nick’s debut, out on LoveGoodMusic, is called Stuck In My Head.
The Dallas, Texas born and raised artist grew up in a house of professional classical musicians. As a child, rather than hire babysitters for gig nights, Nick’s parents just brought him to their performances with the Dallas Symphony. He came away from this upbringing with a firm grounding in music theory, and eclectic taste. Nick has emerged a prodigiously talented singer, songwriter, pianist, producer and arranger. He draws inspiration from Motown, soul, modern and classic pop, and classic hip-hop. Nick counts Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, Allen Stone, Frank Sinatra, Ben Rector, Bruce Hornsby, The Temptations, Michael McDonald and Ben Folds as formative inspirations. Stuck In My Head represents a watershed moment for Nick as a person and as a musician. He finally found the right sound and the right songs to begin his music career. He fell in love with Nashville, where he recorded the EP, and is now a citizen of Music City. And he found a spiritual center after some wilderness years.
The EP’s title track, “Stuck In My Head,” opens with the crackle of a needle hitting vinyl and a lone piano figure. A few second in, the official song bursts forth from the speakers in rich, modern sonic fidelity. The song epitomizes the Nick Fabian aesthetic. The track oozes Motown vitality, that mix of walk-on-cloud positivity, soaring hooks, sophisticated musicianship, undeniable grooves, and inviting and relatable lyrics. Other tracks from the EP like “Just Like That,” “Say Hi,” and “Do That” reflect this classic and contemporary soul-pop songcraft. Nick showcases a reflective ballad side to his artistry with the slow burning “Being With You” and the epiphanic “Exits.” The goose bump-inducing track “Exits” reveals Nick’s spiritual awakening when he discovered his faith after feeling lost in depression and darkness. “In college, I had to commute to classes via this stretch of road. Every morning during my commute, I would collect my thoughts and pull myself together. Watching the exits pass by was a great metaphor for life,” he shares. “That imagery helped me get my life together, come of faith, and it helped me write and think about the deeper things in life.” Now that Nick has found his path, he reflects on the past and says: “I’m most proud I had the courage to pursue music fully, and triumph over the anxiety, depression, and hesitation I felt early on.” In conclusion, he says: “My ultimate goal is to make people look up and admire the transcendent beauty that can be experienced through music.”
