Leo Lopez is an extremely talented guitarist, born on the Caribbean coastal town of Ponce, Puerto Rico. In his small community of Belgica the musical style of Bomba y Plena was born. From his childhood room he listened to the musicians in the streets jam until the wee hours of the morning. At the age of three his mother bought him his first guitar and he was hooked. His formal training started at the age of eight in the public school system and continued with private lessons until he was one of the chosen few to study in the arts academy in his town.
At the age of seventeen Leo journeyed on his own to the InterAmerican University in San German, Puerto Rico to study Classical guitar. Due to his exceptional talent he was recruited to the prestigious Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico where he attained his BA in Music. As a student at the conservatory he was selected to perform at the Heineken Jazz Festival.
Once he graduated, Leo began performing his fusion of Latin Flamenco Jazz seven nights a week with tremendous success. For the next eight years he performed at all of the top hotels and venues in Puerto Rico as a soloist as well as in a duo, trio and quartet format. Leo was part of the house band on a popular Spanish television show for a few years as well as being featured as the main artist for other television shows. This talented guitarist also performed at the Miss Universe pageant on various occasions.
Leo relocated to Orlando with a desire to bring his unique finger picking style to the US. Presently Leo performs as a soloist emphasizing his unique latin-flamenco fusion. His sound is reminiscent of Paco de Lucia but has roots that echo the Afro-Caribbean heritage that he holds close to his heart. Leo provides you with a musical voyage that transports your soul through the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan and Andalusia. His unique sound is a fusion of Flamenco, Salsa and Guaracha but has the improvisational qualities of jazz. Within his ample repertoire you will find Flamenco, Jazz standards, Bossa Nova, Rumba, Salsa, Guaracha, Bolero, Mambo, Merengue, Bomba y Plena, Cumbia and Cuban Son. As if his guitar playing were not enough, Leo also belts out Spanish vocals when the occasion presents itself. He is an artist who has crafted his music to such a degree that he has become the premiere, first call guitarist in Central Florida.
This talented young artist appeals to people from all walks of life since the quality of his music is spectacular and the melodies that he performs are well known to both the native residents and the international community that frequents the area. As a conservatory graduate Leo still holds his classical training close to his heart and performs the Classical genre as well filling the ears of aficionados with his beautiful interpretations of Bach and Tarrega.
