The Hummin’Birds go back in time to pull nectar from earlier eras in American music. We draw our inspiration from masters including Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, the Stanley Brothers, the Louvin Brothers, Bob Wills, Doc Watson, Cindy Walker, Les Paul & Mary Ford… and the list goes on! We deliver an easygoing performance, mixing old time Appalachian tunes with country, bluegrass, gospel, swing and original songs. If we may say so ourselves, our clean vocal harmony and playful instrumentation have delighted audiences over many years! Before forming a duo in Minneapolis in the early 2000’s, we were both active in the Minnesota bluegrass and old time music community, playing in groups including The Bluegrass Buddies, The Ditch Lilies and The Boot Draggers (who evolved into The High 48’s). We met at a bluegrass festival, and realized we quite enjoyed harmonizing together. Eventually we went on to win first place in the 2006 Minnesota Bluegrass & Old Time Music Association duet contest at the Minnesota State Fair before moving to the Denver area later that year. Over time, several talented musicians from Minnesota and Colorado have been included with us in the main line-up, including the most recent addition of our daughter! These days, The Hummin’Birds can be found playing weddings and events in the summertime, usually in a rustic, mountainous setting somewhere in the state of Colorado.
